UPDATE: Victim identified in deadly Jefferson Avenue pedestrian accident

Laura Ann Jane Strum, 61, was killed in a bicycle accident on Jefferson Avenue. Preliminary reports implied she was trying to bike around the van that hit her.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Investigators are working to learn what led up to a deadly accident where a pedestrian was hit and killed on Jefferson Avenue.

Police identified the victim to be Laura Ann Jane Strum, 61, of Newport News.

Officers were called to the 11700 block of Jefferson Avenue just before 1:30 p.m. Monday.

They arrived to find someone who had been hit by a car. Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Police updated the report on Tuesday to say that investigations implied Strum was trying to bike around the van, which was turning southbound out of a parking lot, when she was hit.

The driver remained at the scene after the crash, and no charges have been filed against the unnamed 44-year-old Norfolk man related to this accident.

The southbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue between Thimble Shoals and J. Clyde Morris Boulevard were shut down during the investigation at the scene. The road reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m Monday.
