NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police said they are trying to find 21-year-old Shanon Hodges who is accused of shooting and killing someone at an apartment complex more than a year ago.

Denzel Marquise Labiche, 19, died in a home at The Village of Stoneybrook on May 29, 2017.

Officers said Hodges has been indicted for 2nd Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Discharging a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling, and Kidnapping. Detectives ask anyone who knows where Hodges is to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887) or submit a tip here.

Labiche’s mother, Synedra Brumfield, has been waiting in California for this news. Labiche is from California. He was stationed in Newport News for the military where he served as an Army Private.

“Well losing my son has caused an enormous amount of anxiety and depression in my family, to be honest,” said Brumfield. “There was a lot of phone calls going unanswered, emails going unanswered, and a lot of uncertainty. We refuse to let Denzel just become another hashtag or cold case.”

Brumfield said Hodges was married to her son. The couple met while stationed together.

“They eloped, and I did not find out my son was married until Christmas when I met her for the first time and that is the last time I saw my son in person,” said Brumfield.

Brumfield said she always knew her son’s wife was responsible.

“Domestic violence can happen to men just like it can happen to women,” said Brumfield.

Brumfield hopes that Thursday’s indictment isn’t a year too late. She said she would like to know what took so long to name Hodges as the suspect.

“I believe that she will be brought to justice and she will have her day in court,” said Brumfield. “He was very kind-hearted, loving, intelligent, he had the best smile, the prettiest smile, in the whole wide world.”

The family also said they want Labiche to be remembered for more than just a bizarre crime, but also as an amazing man.
