NORFOLK, Va. — Police determined a body found in a burning home in Norfolk Tuesday morning was killed, but not by the fire.
According to Norfolk Police, Norfolk Fire Rescue responded to a house fire around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of Picadilly Street.
Once crews made their way inside the home, they found the body of a 38-year-old man.
Officials described the fire as small and smoldering that was located near the front door and said it didn't contribute to the man's death.
Investigators have classified the man’s death as a homicide.
The man’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.
Norfolk detectives said the suspect involved in the homicide was arrested after a police chase in Chesapeake on Tuesday afternoon.
Jamal A. Knowles, 34, has been charged with second-degree murder and arson.
Around 2:30 p.m., Police Fugitive Investigators and U.S. Marshals spotted the homicide suspect driving a car in Chesapeake traveling on Route 168.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle near the Hanbury Road exit, but the driver sped away. The vehicle was traveling northbound when he lost control, crossed over into the southbound lanes and struck a vehicle near the Mount Pleasant Road exit.
Police said after the crash, the driver attempted to run away, but they were able to take him into custody.
The suspect and the driver of the other vehicle received non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Chesapeake police are investigating the crash.
