Bond denied for Norfolk man accused in death of 11-year-old girl

Demont Harris, along with his fiancee Latoya Smith, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Smith's daughter, Heaven.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A man accused of killing an 11-year-old girl will remain behind bars.

Bond was denied Wednesday morning for 43-year-old Demont J. Harris. Harris, along with his fiancee Latoya Smith, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Smith's daughter, Heaven Watkins. Bond was previously denied for Smith in a court hearing last week.

According to Norfolk Police, on the morning of May 18, Smith called 911 to say her daughter was unresponsive. When officers got to the home on Balview Avenue they found 11-year-old Heaven suffering from serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner determined Heaven died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

Court documents show Heaven had a history of being abused by her parents, dating back to their time living in their home state of Minnesota.
