NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Coast Guard has confirmed 49-year-old Wesley Schoonmaker has been found safe near Machipongo.

The Coast Guard said Schoonmaker apparently drifted all night in the water and washed up on the Eastern Shore.

He was found by a good Samaritan after he walked into their backyard.

The good Samaritan called 911 and local medics transported Schoonmaker to Riverside Hospital in Onley.

Reports indicate he is windburned but is expected to be okay.

“We appreciate the team effort from different agencies and stations during the search,” said Coast Guard Lt.j.g. Bradley S. Milliken, command duty officer at the Sector Hampton Roads Command Center in Portsmouth. “We’re glad he’s okay.”

Schoonmaker was last seen wearing a full wetsuit leaving his home in Norfolk.

He stated he was going to test out a new oar by paddling his 8-foot raft near Willoughby Spit.

An urgent marine information broadcast alert was sent out by Watchstanders in the Sector Hampton Roads Command Center in Portsmouth.

Multiple agencies responded and a search ensued through the night until Schoonmaker was found along the Eastern Shore.
