NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is facing arson and burglary charges after a fire at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home.
Norfolk Police were called to the funeral home in the 800 block of Norview Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning for a burglary alarm.
When officers got on the scene, they allegedly saw a man leaving. Police arrested the man, later identified as Harold Wayne Centers, a little later at a nearby 7-Eleven store.
At the same time, Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to a fire alarm at the funeral home. Once they got to the scene, they found smoke coming from the eves of the building.
Fire crews forced entry and found the fire to be in the chapel area of the funeral home. The fire was controlled quickly.
Officials say Centers is facing several arson charges, as well as a burglary charge.
It is not clear how much damage the funeral home sustained. No one was injured during the fire.
