Man to serve 5 years for shooting death of girlfriend

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Lamontraye McAdams will serve five years for shooting and killing his girlfriend, Nateria "Nae" Powell, in May 2017.

Powell was a senior at Maury High School at the time of her death.

McAdams entered a guilty plea to Involuntary Manslaughter in February.

A judge sentenced him to 10 years Friday, but suspended five of those years. The breakdown of the sentence is as follows:

  • Involuntary Manslaughter: 8 years, 5 suspended conditioned on 10 years good behavior, 3 years supervised probation
  • Reckless Handling of a Firearm Resulting in Death: 1 year 6 months
  • Obstruction: 6 months
