Navy investigates bomb threat at Colonna's Shipyard

A ship was evacuated, and the U.S. Navy has taken over the investigation.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Fire Department was alerted to a bomb threat aboard a ship at Colonna's Shipyard on Wednesday.

Officials said they received a 911 call around 9:30 a.m., and a ship was evacuated.

Lieutenant Commander Courtney Hillson at Naval Surface Forces Atlantic in Norfolk said the threat was against the USS Gunston Hall, a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship while it was pier-side.

Hillson said when the threat was found, and immediate steps were taken including a security sweep. Both the shipyard and local law enforcement were notified, and NCIS is involved.

As of 12:55 p.m., Commander Naval Surface Force Atlantic Deputy Public Affairs Officer Jim DeAngio said they have finished scanning and searching the ship, and they weren't able to find anything.

The Navy spokesperson said the ship returned from deployment in the fall of 2018 and it entered the shipyard on March 19.

No further information about the threat has been released at this time.
