NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk City Council approved a budget for the fiscal year 2019 of $1.3 billion dollars.
The budget includes a 10 cent real estate tax rate increase which will generate $18.5 million for the city.
The city plans on investing the additional revenue into funding for Norfolk Public Schools, implement a plan to redevelop three public housing areas, restore over $1 million in funding to the Norfolk Police Department, begin addressing the backlog of aging city vehicles and provide a salary increase for city employees.
Different city departments found $8 million in expense reductions and eliminated 82 positions. According to the city, increasing to certain fees also added another $3 million in revenue.
