Norfolk putting new upgrades beneath the streets of Ocean View

City officials are investing money into new sanitary sewer and water pipes.

NORFOLK, Va. — In Ocean View, the City of Norfolk has begun work on a $2.3 million construction project.

The area will get new sanitary sewer and water pipes, along with resurfaced streets.

Lucas Sturnfield ’s home backs up to the construction and he said the project caused East Ocean View Road to get even more crowded.

“They have a lot of lanes out there. They have you discreetly driving in a single lane, you can’t use the middle lane for turning,” said Sturnfield.

He added the construction work caused a rupture.

“Five blocks down they ruptured something and it smelled awful. The entire area smelled so bad, so that was clearly sewage."

Neighbor Peter Hatchard said he’s excited for newly resurfaced streets.

“This is short-term stuff. The long-term gain, the medium-term gain is that we now have a safer road, a quieter road. People are now crossing the road safely,” said Hatchard.

City officials said the project will be completed by the Spring of 2020.
