People are trying to escape this weekend's heat, and businesses are cashing in

Business owners inside of Selden Market said the hot weather has led to a spike in sales.

NORFOLK, Va. — It’s a rush to beat the heat this weekend.

On Saturday, the scorching sun led people in Norfolk to the inside of cool buildings.

The hot weather led to a spike in business at Selden Market.

Duane Dinio, the owner of S’mores Amore in Norfolk said the heat led to a busy day for him and his wife Kristine Dinio.

“It’s drawn a lot of people that have come in because of the heat,” said Duane Dinio.

“It helps that we have a lot of air conditioning here, and it’s a nice big space.”

The s’mores sold quickly during the peak afternoon heat.

Steps away from S’mores Amore, Giselle Ramirez was busy straightening up displays at KOR Vintage, a small clothing shop owned by her mother.

Ramirez also noticed a spike in customer traffic.

“We’ve had a lot of short and skirt sales because it’s hot,” said Ramirez.

As customers wandered from one vendor to another, they were relieved to catch a break from the heat.

“They’ve said that it's super scorching out there and that they just can’t wait to get inside and that it’s too hot and they knew the a/c would be in here, and the s'mores,” said Kristine Dinio.

The Selden Market has an indoor connection to Slover Library and restaurants at The Main.

Duane Dinio said that’s where many of his customers came from as they tried to spend more time indoors.
