NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk police are investigating a shooting Sunday afternoon that left a 13-year-old boy fighting for his life in the hospital.

The shooting occurred at Lincoln Street and E. Olney Road around 3:40 p.m.

When police arrived, they found a 13-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

Lavonne Pledger said it’s horrible that Mother’s Day of all days, is when this occurred.

“This is a tragic day for someone’s mom and that’s something that probably won’t change. And this probably could have been prevented, no this should have been prevented.”” said Pledger.

Community activist Bilal Muhammad said when he heard of the shooting, he drove to the scene right away.

“I was rushing there to try to address this situation and help try to console the community and the family. And now we pray that the young man will be okay and we pray that out of this, the individuals in the community can see enough is enough,” said Bilal.

The victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. 

No other injuries were reported.
