WASHINGTON (WVEC) -- Norfolk-based ships USS Monterey, USS Laboon and submarine USS John Warner assisted in missile strikes against Syria, according to MilitaryTimes.com.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey fired 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles, and the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Laboon fired seven Tomahawks, MilitaryTimes.com said. The Virginia-class submarine USS John Warner fired six Tomahawk cruise missiles.

This is believed to be the first known combat use of a Virginia-class submarine, according to MilitaryTimes.com.

The USS Monterey departed Naval Station Norfolk on October 2017 for deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. 6th Fleet areas of operation. The USS Laboon deployed from Naval Station Norfolk in February.

U.S., British and French forces unleashed 105 missiles on three Syrian chemical weapons facilities early Saturday, leveling at least one building and setting back the country's chemical weapons program "for years," Pentagon officials said.
