USS Dwight D. Eisenhower returns to its homeport after undergoing maintenance

The Ike had been undergoing a 'planned incremental availability' (PIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — After undergoing maintenance for several months, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) returned to its homeport on Wednesday.

The Ike was undergoing a "planned incremental availability" (PIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was guided down the Elizabeth River Wednesday morning back to Naval Station Norfolk.

Its remaining PIA can be completed back at Naval Station Norfolk, where the ship's crew can focus on preparations for its next deployment.

"As the PIA concludes, we are focusing on preparing our Sailors by conducting drills, attending schools, and attaining and maintaining needed qualifications through embarking on other carriers," the U.S. Navy said in a news release.
