Waterside Drive pedestrian bridge to be demolished this weekend

Traffic heads-up: drivers are encouraged to use Main Street, City Hall Avenue, and Brambleton Avenue via Saint Paul's Boulevard, and Boush Street as alternate routes.

NORFOLK, Va. — Waterside Drive will be closed for several days while crews tear down one of the street's pedestrian bridges.

The project started Friday and continues through March 25 at 5 a.m., the city said on its Twitter page.

When the demolition takes place, Waterside Drive between Saint Paul's Boulevard and Atlantic Street will be closed to all traffic and pedestrians.

Crews will demolish and permanently remove the elevated pedestrian bridge near Commercial Place.

The bridge connects the parking lot at the Sheraton Hotel to what is now the ADP building. According to City of Norfolk spokeswoman Lori Crouch, the bridge had been closed for more than a year. ADP had closed off the entrance to their building, making the bridge no longer serve a purpose.

Crouch said the concrete bridge supports will be left in place, with plans to turn them into a platform for public art at the Waterside Drive gateway to Downtown.

During the bridge's demolition, pedestrians will be able to cross Waterside Drive at Atlantic Street and St. Paul’s Boulevard, and drivers are encouraged to use Main Street, City Hall Avenue, and Brambleton Avenue via Saint Paul's Boulevard, and Boush Street as alternate routes.

Norfolk Police will assist with traffic.

The City of Norfolk has a 24-hour hotline to address construction concerns at 757-664-7220.
