5-year-old boy seriously hurt after being shot in Portsmouth

Portsmouth Police tell us a five-year-old was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after being shot Monday afternoon.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Police say a five-year-old is in serious condition after being shot in Portsmouth Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened 12:15 p.m. near the intersection of Lexington Drive and Columbus Avenue.

The child was taken to CHKD, and is currently in the ICU.

“It’s pathetic, it’s pathetic. Your kids can’t come outside and play, people are scared to come to your house because they don’t know if they are going to get shot at or robbed," said resident Michael Hargrove.

Hargrove says he hears shots fired almost every night.

"I’m a very concerned parent, what are they doing about it? Not a damn thing. When are they going to do something about it? Soon I hope,” said Hargrove.

Tameka Hodges says it has gotten to the point where it’s dangerous just to sit outside.

“Sitting on the porch, broad daylight, everybody is outside, shots come flying through the court, I had to duck behind my porch," said Hodges.“It’s so bad that sometimes you be like ok it’s normal to us, you never know if it’s your kid or not, it’s just normal to us and it’s sad that that got to be normal."

There is no word on any possible suspects at this time.
