Police identify Portsmouth woman who died in police custody

Portsmouth police officers arrested 28-year-old Carmeita Jane Vangilder Thursday night, but she suffered a medical emergency while in their custody and died.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) — A woman died from a medical emergency while in the custody of Portsmouth police Thursday night.

Portsmouth police arrested 28-year-old Carmeita Jane Vangilder on an outstanding warrant at 8:18 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13 in the 1000 block of Frederick Boulevard.

Vangilder was taken to police headquarters where she experienced a medical emergency. Medics responded to provide treatment, but she eventually died.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the in-custody death at the request of the Portsmouth Police Department.

This is an ongoing investigation and there is no further information to report at this time.
