Portsmouth police hold RESET walk following deadly shooting at motel

Short for "Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma," Portsmouth Police Department began using the program in 2016 as a way of reaching out and trying to heal communities.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Portsmouth police conducted a RESET walk Monday in response to a deadly shooting Saturday night. Officers said someone killed 45-year-old Dominic D. Ricks at the Relax Inn at 1031 London Boulevard.

"RESET" stands for "Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma." It's a program Portsmouth Police Department started using in May 2016 as a way of reaching out and trying to heal communities affected by violent crime.

"We go in and we talk to the community members and see what we can do to help them and offer them services," said police department spokeswoman Detective Misty Holley.

Although RESET walks typically take place in neighborhoods, the walk on Monday was at the Relax Inn.

"There are a lot of families that do live in hotels like this for weeks, months, and sometimes even up to a year because they just have no where else to stay," Holley explained.

13News Now visited the home of Rick's parents in Portsmouth. His father said his son was living at the motel while trying to "get back on his feet."

Police have not made an arrest for Ricks' killing. Detectives encourage anyone with information about case to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP℠. People also can submit tips through the P3 Tips app found in the Google Play and App stores or here.
