PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth's Animal Control was called for a black cat that attacked several people.

On Thursday, officials were able to capture the cat in the area 5800 blocks of Dunkirk and Eric Streets and the 3600 block of Tyre Neck Road. Test results for the cat came back positive for rabies.

The Health Department strongly advises that Portsmouth residents and visitors take the following steps to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies:

  • Eliminate outdoor food sources around the home
  • Avoid contact between yourself (and your pets) and wild animals or stray dogs and cats
  • Vaccinate all pets against rabies because it's the law

Report any stray animals to the Portsmouth Bureau of Animal Control by calling 393-8430. If contact with a wild animal or stray occurs between you or your pet, contact the Portsmouth Department of Public Health at 393-8585 ext. 8585.
