SUFFOLK, Va. — Do you love to garden, but don't have space?

Healthy Suffolk’s Community Garden Program has an opportunity to Adopt-a-Bed and “grow some veg” in 2019.  Anyone is welcome to adopt the free raised garden beds at the East Suffolk Community Garden at the East Suffolk Recreation Center.

There are eight raised beds about 10 feet long, 3.5 feet wide, and 1.5 feet deep filled with compost and rich soil.

Adoptees are free to grow vegetables, fruits or flowers as long as they agree to maintain their bed throughout the year.

The adoption is open to any family or group of friends from a church, business or other organization.  The adoption is for the calendar year with the option of extending to next year.

“The beds are ready to grow.  We hope to see families and friends having fun and learning about plants and food.  Adoptees do not have to have any previous gardening experience.  We will help with advice and have free workshops to make the experience more enjoyable,” said Shelley Barlow, Director of the Community Garden Program.

Anyone interested should contact Christian Prohaska at 757-514-7281, or email cprohaska@suffolkva.us.

Planters will not have a fixed schedule. All of the planning, maintaining, and harvesting is up to the adoption group.
