Man arrested following Suffolk hospital assault

After security told Norman Ontague Ashburn III he couldn't bring a gun into the emergency room, he allegedly pulled out and used a can of pepper spray.

SUFFOLK, Va. — A Suffolk man is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted a security officer at Sentara Obici Hospital.

Police say that on Friday, 51-year-old Norman Ontague Ashburn III tried to go into the emergency room with a concealed weapon, showing a badge from an out-of-state police department.

Security told him he couldn't go in with a weapon and he left. When he came back a short time later, security asked if he still had the gun.

According to police, that's when Ashburn got angry and reached into his front vest pocket. We're told he used pepper spray on the security officer.

Ashburn was arrested on two counts of injury -- caustic agent, explosive, or fire. He was also charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer and failure to produce a weapon permit.

Police say Ashburn could face additional charges. He is currently being held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
