One person killed in crash at Suffolk landfill

The driver of a Jeep was killed following a crash involving a tractor-trailer Friday morning at the entrance to the SPSA Landfill.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Police in Suffolk are investigating a crash that left a man dead at the entrance to the SPSA Landfill.

Investigators said the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday, where westbound Route 58 intersects with Bob Foeller Drive. A tractor-trailer and a Jeep had crashed into each other at the landfill's front entrance.

The driver of the Jeep, 56-year-old Timothy Lynn Shumaker of Smithfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two lanes were closed for several hours due to the police investigation, but all lanes were back open at 2 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
