Ten displaced by Suffolk fire

Seven children and three adults were displaced by a fire in Suffolk, but all of them were able to escape without injuries.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews responded to a residential structure fire that displaced 10 people.

The call came in to Emergency Communications at 8:19 p.m. and crews arrived on scene in the 100 block of Halifax Street four minutes later. Engines 1, 2, 3 and 4, Ladders 3 and 6, Battalions 1 and 2, Medic 3, Rescue 1 and EMS-1 responded to the scene.

Battalion Chief Dave Harrell said the firefighters found heavy smoke when they arrived at the two-story residence.

No one was injured, but seven children and three adults were displaced. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross. 

The fire was under control by 8:43 p.m. and contained to the second floor.

Suffolk Police assisted with traffic control. They had the road in the immediate area closed during the incident.

The Fire Marshal's Office has determined the cause of the fire was accidental.
