Annual Maci's Ride in Virginia Beach raises money, autism awareness

Maci’s Ride is an annual charity fundraising event that benefits the Tidewater Autism Society.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The 5th Annual Maci's Ride in Virginia Beach on Sunday raised money and awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects more than 3.5 million Americans and the disorder has increased 6% to 15% each year from 2002 to 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Maci’s Ride is an annual charity fundraising event that benefits the Tidewater Autism Society.

After seeing how the Tidewater Autism Society helped his granddaughter Maci, Tom Gorney organized the first Maci’s Ride in October 2015 with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the organization.

Since then, the event has been held the weekend following Father's Day every year, according to its Facebook Page.
