VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The East Coast Surfing Championships are underway on the oceanfront where several hundred competitors are vying for the gold!
The yearly professional and amateur event draws hundreds of surfers who compete for East Coast surfing titles, prizes, history and the sheer love of surfing.
Other beach-oriented sports and recreation include volleyball, a boardwalk 5K run, street skate and ramp contests, swimsuit contests and even food, drinks and live music.
The competition runs a full week and kicked off Sunday where competitors participated in different races along the Rudee Inlet.
Monday through Wednesday is surfing from sun up to sun down.
By Thursday, the surf competition starts at 2nd Street and you can make your way down to the beach by 8:30 a.m. to see Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May host a volleyball clinic.
Saturday has a fistful of events, including the Geico 5K Boardwalk Run at 5th Street, which you can participate in.
Then on Sunday, the surfers who came out on top will be crowned and volleyball pros will compete in a finale competition.
