Ex-Kellam HS teacher gets 6 months for sex with student

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A former Kellam High School teacher who authorities say had sex with a student has been sentenced to six months in jail.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A former Kellam High School teacher who admitted to having sex with a student has been ordered by a judge to serve six months in jail.

George Brown was arrested and charged with one count of custodial indecent liberties in May of 2015 after a police investigation revealed he and a student were engaged in an inappropriate relationship.

Brown had been a technology teacher at Kellam since 2010. During the 2011-2012 academic year, he also taught at Ocean Lakes High School.

In January, Brown pleaded guilty to taking indecent liberties with the 17-year-old student.

The student, who is now 19, and her mother gave emotional testimony during sentencing Wednesday.

Brown's victim said his inappropriate behavior began when he came onto her when she was 15. She described his control over her, and how he would do her homework and write excuses for being late class.

She said the relationship lasted several months, and included Brown fondling her inside a classroom closet and inviting her over to have sex.

After Brown's arrest in May 2015, the student said she was constantly bullied and shamed by other students in and out of school.

"You destroyed me," she said.

Brown apologized to the young woman before he was sentenced.

"I'm so sorry. It's completely my fault," Brown said looking directly at his former student. "I wish I could take back what I did."

Chief Circuit Court Judge William O'Brien sentenced Brown to five years behind bars with all but six months suspended.

O'Brien admonished Brown's role in ruining the trust relationship between a teacher and a student and called his actions "deplorable."

Brown has been ordered to turn himself in at the jail Monday at 8 a.m.
