VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police said they took a man into custody he shot and killed a woman in a house near the area of Oceana Boulevard and General Booth Boulevard Friday.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said it got a call just after 5:30 p.m. about the shooting inside a home in the 1300 block of Crane Crescent.
Officers said they detained Shawn Michael Sheppard, 33, who lives in the home, after they arrived at the scene.
According to police, Sheppard was handling a gun when it went off. The bullet hit 40-year-old Kristina Hager. She died there.
Police said they arrested Sheppard who faces charges of Involuntary Manslaughter, Discharging a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
Multiple neighbors told 13News Now they did not hear anything until police arrived.
Detectives said the incident remains under an active investigation by the VBPD Homicide Unit members.
