VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — It's known as "the toughest two minutes in sports."

Firefighters from across the nation and right here in Hampton Roads are at Mount Trashmore to compete in the annual Firefighter Combat Challenge this weekend.

Firefighters race for the fastest time, while performing five physically demanding tasks. Those trials include racing up a five-story tower with a 42-pound hose pack and dragging a 175-pound dummy 106 feet across the finish line.

Opening ceremonies were held Friday evening with the competition beginning immediately afterward.  It will pick up again at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The event is free and open to the public and spectators will be up close and personal to cheer for their favorites.

Winners will advance toward qualifying for the World Finals this fall in Montgomery, Alabama. That event will be broadcast live on ESPN.
