MAKING A MARK: Local grounds supervisor puts pride, passion into his work

David Myers goes above and beyond maintaining the beauty and spreading the sunshine at Atlantic Shore Retirement Community in Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — David Myers has made a living out of stopping to smell the roses.

"I want those yards, those beds, to look like it's my house," says Myers, the grounds supervisor for Atlantic Shore Retirement Community for more than 20 years.

But he spends his day doing more than just landscaping.

"I work for this community of wonderful residents," he says.

"And I get to interact with them, knock on their doors, ask them questions, get feedback. And along the way, I meet the most wonderful people in the world."

For two years recently, Myers' heart led him away from grounds management, but not away from serving others.

"I went back to driving for a bus line that ferried the military from the Norfolk Airport to the Norfolk Naval Base. That, to me, was one of the most rewarding things I could've left here to go and do," says Myers.

"Did that for a year, transitioned over to the City of Virginia Beach, drove a school bus [be]cause they were hurting for drivers."

Today, though, he's back at Atlantic Shores, soaking up a career in full bloom.

"Here I am again, with some new employees, some of the ones who were here before, and we're kinda rebuilding things," says Myers.

"When you have a job and you believe in it, it just comes so easy and natural."
