VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) - Police have released the identity of a man who died after a car he was working on fall on top of him.
This happened at an auto repair business in the 3600 block of Bonney Road.
Emergency Dispatch received the call for this at around 4:35 p.m. and sent a call out for a technical rescue. Once on scene, first responders discovered that 54-year-old James Winthrop Harder was deceased, called off the technical rescue call and turned the scene and incident over to police.
Police say a small SUV fell on top of Harder. It's unclear exactly what caused the car lift to fall.
General Manager of Accurate-Tune Plus John Turner said all car lifts come with safety locks. He believes the locks either malfunctioned, or they were never locked into place.
"If you bypass the locks which some shops will do, then there's nothing holding it in place, and if you do have a hydraulic failure or you have a cable failure it will come down," he said.
Police do not suspect foul play at this time -- they believe it was an accident. It is still unclear however exactly how the car lift fell.
13News Now reached out to Maaco for more details on the accident, but the auto shop declined to comment.
