VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — At least 49 people are dead and dozens injured following an attack on worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Among those hurt in the attack are family members of a Virginia Beach woman.

The young son and husband of Leah Sacra's sister are both in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds.

Her nephew Roes is only 2 years old.

I mean, he's a baby," Leah said. "What kind of monster does this?"

Roes and his father Jul were both shot during the attack. Sacra said her sister got the heartbreaking news from Jul himself as the shooting took place.

“He called her and she answered the phone and he said, "I’m down, I’ve been hit,'" Leah said. "And she’s like, 'What are you talking about?' He said there was a shooting and she asked if the baby OK and he said, 'I think so. I’m not sure.'”

Leah said Roes underwent surgery this morning for what they believe are two gunshot wounds. The boy's father also had several wounds.

"His injuries are unclear," Leah said. "What she has told me is his lungs arms and legs... he was covered by sheets and was in a significant amount of pain."

Leah said she's trying to get a flight to be with her family during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up to help the family pay for medical and household expenses while they recover.  Click here if you wish to donate.
