Runners take over the Oceanfront for 46th Annual Shamrock Marathon

The marathon in Virginia Beach drew runners in from around the country this St. Patrick’s Day.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — More than 10,000 runners took over the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Sunday for the 46th Annual Shamrock Marathon and Half Marathon.

The marathon drew runners in from around the country this St. Patrick’s Day.

“It’s our first time here at Shamrock,” runner Dana King said.

“We’re running a group from Chester County, Pennsylvania.”

Crowds cheered along the sidelines, showing their support to marathon runners.

“Beautiful scenery, you can’t beat Virginia Beach, they really pull everything out and do a great job of making you feel welcome,” runner Christy Bennett said.

Runners who crossed the finish line said they have different reasons they enjoy the hobby.

Some said it’s for the love of it, others said, “because I’m crazy.”

“There’s the golden pot at the end of the rainbow,” Bennett said.

“At the finish line, so definitely a reward for you at the end.”
