The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, but its exact nature remains under investigation.

Virginia Beach Fire said the working smoke detector may have been the difference between life and death in this case. Firefighters remind everyone to have at least one working smoke alarm in your home, and to check the batteries at least once a month.
