VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A senior couple was forced from their Virginia Beach home Tuesday afternoon after a fire ripped through their home.

Firefighters arrived at a home shortly after 3:20 p.m. in the 4700 block of Honeygrove Rd. in the Aragona section of Virginia Beach.

Arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames billowing from the garage and right side of the residence. One of the residents were awakened by a working smoke alarm.

The couple as well as their pet dog were able to escape safely before firefighters arrived.

Crews contained the fire within 10 minutes of arrival. Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the flames.

The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced couple.
