Va. Beach city council to be briefed on new cannabis oil laws

Virginia recently expanded legal protections for patients seeking to use medical cannabis oils. Lawmakers also passed legislation allowing for in-state production and sales of medical cannabis oils.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- State Delegate Glenn Davis will brief Virginia Beach city council on the future of medical marijuana in the Commonwealth.

Davis is one of the lawmakers who supported the legislation to legalize the use of cannabis oil for medical purposes.

Earlier this year, Governor Ralph Northam signed HB1251 and SB726. The change in law doesn't legalize marijuana, however it does allow what's called an "affirmative defense." That means if a person is stopped by police, they can present a letter from their doctor.

Davis said he supports the law, as it opens up new avenues of medical treatment.

"CBD [Cannabidiol] oil has been known to help people from epilepsy to cancer to Crohn's disease," he said. "It's also been able to replace opioids in certain other situations as well, and anything we can do to help Virginia cope with some of Virginia's toughest diseases as well as start to go down the path of alternative medicine that we can prescribe in replacement of opioids."

Davis added that these new laws also provide an economic opportunity for those who get the license to grow and provide CBD oil.

Warren D. Harris the Director of Economic Development for Virginia Beach is expected to hit on that during Tuesday afternoon's council's meeting as well.
