Va. Beach gets four surplus military vehicles for emergencies

Thanks to a program with the Department of Defense, the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office received four surplus military tactical trucks for free.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Friday marks the official start of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Scientists predict we will have several named storms. Earlier this week, Tropical Storm Alberto brought deadly flooding and mudslides to Florida.

"We've seen it everywhere. It's very sad," explained Sergeant Todd Moissett.

Moissett works at the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office. He said the Sheriff's Office is prepared for any natural disaster.

"We have the equipment and we will be ready to go at any notice to help those citizens, whether it be you, your neighbor or someone across the city," he said.

Thanks to a program with the Department of Defense, the Sheriff's Office received four surplus military tactical trucks for free.

Moissett said, "The only cost we have to pay is any maintenance or repairs that need to be done once we got them."

Each truck is unique. The Humvee can transport anyone from young children to the elderly. The 10-86 truck has a crane on the back.

"We can be self-sufficient when it comes down to delivering equipment food, water to shelters."

The City of Virginia Beach will have its own resources, but it will allow other resources like the National Guard to help other hard-hit areas.

"We have them and it'd be great if they sit here and never get used," Moissett explained.
