VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The Virginia Beach Courthouse was evacuated due to "an incident that occurred" Wednesday morning, PIO Kathy Hieatt said.

The courthouse has been reopened with the exception of the immediate incident area, which remains secured, Hieatt said.

According to a tweet, an initial investigation has determined that the substance does not appear to have been toxic or a threat.

The five people exposed to it have been released and were told to seek medical attention if they develop unusual symptoms.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m., Hieatt said.

The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office said a package in the mail containing an unknown white substance was found by a court clerk.

Five people were in the vicinity of the package at the time.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team is investigating.

As a result, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney's Office is closing for the day.
