VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The state of Virginia is under a public health threat because of the coronavirus according to Erin Sutton with the Virginia Beach Office of Emergency Management.
“The biggest kind of benchmark here is we still have travel-related cases, not community-level transmission,” Sutton said.
Officials said the City of Virginia Beach has created a coronavirus task force. It includes city representatives, health department officials, and school leaders.
“We have to monitor it on a daily basis. That is the best way to do it with an evolving health emergency,” Sutton explained.
A big part of the discussion is what to do with big events planned across the city including sporting events, concerts and even the Something in the Water Festival. Sutton said they are talking with organizers almost daily to come up with a game plan.

Sutton explained, “They have to consider all the things in between. What are any modifications? Canceling part of it, shifting activities and they are weighing all of the options right now.”
Right now, no events in Virginia Beach are canceled. Officials said it is up to the city manager to make the decision if an event needs to be canceled because of the coronavirus.
