Virginia Beach Public Library hosts 'Summer Reading Challenge'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The annual 'Summer Reading Challenge' at Virginia Beach Public Libraries kicks off June 11.

The challenge benefits school-age children who may be at risk of losing reading skills during the summer break. It's a fun way to encourages kids to read.

The challenge begins June 11, 2018, and ends August 4, 2018, at 5 p.m.

Anyone can read whatever they'd like. Participants can count books, comic books, magazines, newspapers in print or digital formats. Audiobooks count, too!

The youth reading incentives:

  • 5 books - Free book
  • 10, 20 and 40 books - Prize wheel spin
  • 50 books - Sand animal bean bag toy
  • Super Reader Badge: Read for 20 minutes a day, 5 days every week this summer and unlock an invitation to the Super Reader Celebration at the Virginia Aquarium on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Teenager reading incentives:

  • 3 books - $12.00 Barnes & Noble gift card
  • 10 books - Raffle entry for $20 Barnes & Noble gift card
  • 20 books - Raffle entry for $40 Barnes & Noble gift card
  • Participate in the activity badges to be entered in raffles for a variety of cool prizes!

Adult reading incentives:

  • Read for 20 hours and receive a Friends tote bag and a $1.00 coupon to the Frends shop
  • The more you read, the better chance you have of winning a raffle prize.

To participate, readers need to sign up for the reading tracking software, Beanstack. The program also gives reading recommendations.
