NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — Newly unsealed documents show that police are investigating a third-party individual in relation to the death of AJ Hadsell.
Since the disappearance and death of AJ Hadsell in 2015, many have looked at Wesley Hadsell, the 18-year-old's stepdad.
Wesley was sentenced to 20 years in prison in November 2017 for illegally possessing 80 rounds of ammunition. He has not been charged in the death of AJ.
According to documents, Wesley's cellmate at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail wrote two handwritten letters claiming that he had direct knowledge of AJ's death. The Longwood University freshman was home on spring break when she vanished in 2015.
After weeks of searching, police used an address in Hadsell's GPS history, which led them to an abandoned home in Southampton County. There, they found AJ’s body in a shallow grave. The Medical Examiner said AJ died from homicidal violence.
Wesley Hadsell's cellmate claims he had both a 'professional and personal relationship with Hadsell' prior to being jailed. The cellmate also claims that Hadsell and AJ came over to his home in Suffolk sometime in January or February of 2015, prior to her disappearance
Investigators said they first want to verify the cellmate had a pre-existing relationship with Hadsell before he went to jail.
The search warrant was for the cell mate’s laptop, so that police can look into the cell mate’s claims that he had a role in AJ's 'Abduction and murder, whether that be in assisting Mr. Hadsell, before, during or after the offense.'
The laptop is now in police custody, and they believe any evidence of involvement may be there, but the cellmate wants immunity before he will speak with investigators.
