Motorcyclist dies following crash in Elizabeth City

Witnesses told police the motorcycle had been driving without any headlights on at the time of the crash.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Police say a motorcyclist died following a crash in Elizabeth City.

The accident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Halsted Boulevard and Walker Avenue.

Investigators say the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Halsted, while a Jeep Wrangler was southbound. The Wrangler attempted to make a left turn onto Walker Avenue when it collided with the motorcycle.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle had been driving without any headlights on at the time of the crash.  The motorcyclist, 39-year-old Luiz Leal, was taken to Albemarle Sentara Hospital where he later died.

The crash remains under investigation, and authorities ask that if you saw the crash happen, to contact Officer E. Goodwin with Elizabeth City Police.
