GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) -- Gates County Sheriff Randy Hathaway has tendered a letter of resignation to step down from his post starting this week.
Hathaway submitted a letter to the Gates County Board of Commissioners on July 5 and resigned July 9.
In that letter, Hathaway detailed that the recent primary results and the effect that various proceedings have had on his family prompted him to step down.
In January, Hathaway and three of his deputies were charged with obtaining property by false pretense after a state investigation. Hathaway also faces a charge for failing to discharge duties.
The criminal charges against him will be heard in court on September 10.
