Registration deadline is Friday for N.C. Dem presidential primary

People who want to vote in North Carolina's March 3 primary election must register with their county board of elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 7.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina's Democratic presidential primary is the end of the week.

People who want to vote in North Carolina's March 3 primary election have to register with their county board of elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 7. If you miss the deadline, you can still register and vote during the state's early voting period from February 13-29.

Those requesting an absentee ballot for the primary can do so until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25.

Presidential preference will be on the ballot, along with various state and local offices.

Photo ID requirements are suspended in North Carolina right now due to legal challenges. The only exception is for those who want to register same-day, which is allowed during early voting. Same-day registrants will have to provide a valid photo ID.

For others who have already registered, the verification process will be simple, according to Mecklenburg County Director of Elections Michael Dickerson.

"Most of us will walk right in, state our name and address, and we'll walk right out," Dickerson said.

The early voting period in North Carolina is from February 13 to 29. At an early voting site, registered voters may update their address, but not their party affiliation.

Registered voters who wish to change their party affiliation must do so by February 7. You can find early-voting sites by visiting the NC State Board of Elections website.

To confirm your registration status, you can use the State Board’s voter lookup tool.
