Coast Guard searching for missing fisherman near Avon; possible boat found

The Coast Guard has located a boat matching the description of 75-year-old Anthony Neri's Carolina Skiff. Neri left near Avon, North Carolina Monday morning and has not been seen or heard from since.

AVON, N.C. (WVEC) — The United States Coast Guard is searching for a boater who disappeared while on a fishing trip Monday.

As of 1:40 Wednesday morning, Coast Guard crewmembers found a boat matching the description of 75-year-old Anthony Neri's Carolina skiff 24 miles southeast of the Oregon Inlet Sea Buoy. There is no word if Neri was found onboard or not.

The Coast Guard and other partners have searched about 2,122 square miles within the past 48 hours.

Neri left near Avon, North Carolina around 10 a.m. Monday aboard a 21-foot white Carolina Skiff. Neri's wife said he planned to be back home around sunset.

The Coast Guard has dispatched several boats in search of Neri, as well as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter that is searching from the air.

The North Carolina National Park Service is also assisting the Coast Guard in the search.
