The Currituck County Sheriff’s office identified the man found dead inside a home in Coinjock, North Carolina on Tuesday night.
Sheriff Matt Beickert confirmed the victim is 36-year-old Adam Markert. The investigation into Markert’s death led officers to 25-year-old Lucas Molesky. Officers took Molesky into custody after a manhunt and standoff in Chesapeake, Wednesday.
Molesky is charged with murder and is awaiting extradition to Currituck County, North Carolina.
Markert’s older sister Sarah said she and her family are coping with her brother’s death, and they are struggling to figure out why he was killed.
“It’s just so sad,” said Sarah Markert. “It’s just... I can’t even put into words how angry I am. That it happened, and how it happened.”
Sarah Markert explained her brother was dating Molesky’s mother, but it was a “toxic relationship,” which ultimately led to problems with Molesky.
Sarah Markert explained her brother’s girlfriend left him in charge of the house, and her son before leaving for a vacation. Hours later, Sarah said her brother was dead.
“It’s just senseless,” said Markert. “It's a senseless crime, and if anyone is in a bad relationship, get out of it now. Because he just couldn't, and because he stayed, he lost his life over something probably so stupid.”
Sarah Markert said her family plans on burying Adam next week. She said he was known as “Captain Safety” and had a contagious smile, someone who was always willing to give a helping hand.
“He was very funny, had a great sense of humor,” said Markert. “Whenever you were in a bad mood, he could just make you laugh and take you out of it so quickly. That’s the one thing I’m going to miss about him the most.”
The Markert family created a GoFundMe for Adam’s funeral expenses, and they said they appreciate the outpouring of support they have received so far.
Lindsay Voorhees with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said they are waiting on Markert’s autopsy before releasing more information surrounding his death.
