NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WVEC) -- NCDOT officials are closing the Bonner Bridge during the overnight hours from Sunday into Monday as the replacement project moves into its next phase.

The bridge will be closed several times starting at 10 p.m. Sunday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday.

Crews will have to reposition cranes, as well as pile hammers and other materials used for the project during this time.

You can find the process for the closures below:

  • At 10 p.m. on Sunday, one lane of N.C. 12 will be closed at the south end of the bridge. Flaggers will allow traffic to flow in a one-lane pattern until the closures are required.
  • Once bridge crews are ready, the bridge will be closed to both directions of traffic for up to 30 minutes. After the road closure, traffic will be cleared in both directions through the one-lane pattern.
  • After traffic in both directions is clear, the bridge will close again for another 30 minutes. This process may repeat throughout the night until 5 a.m. on Monday, when traffic on the bridge will resume in both directions.

Officials ask that motorists keep in mind that these activities are weather and equipment dependent.

NCDOT will notify the public if the closures need to be rescheduled.
