WATCH: The moment a tractor trailer plows into a NC classroom

Surveillance video from Grace Christian Academy shows the exact moment a logging truck slammed into one of the classrooms.

HAW RIVER, N.C. (WFMY) — A log truck crashed into Lamb’s Chapel Church, in Haw River, Monday afternoon just after 4:30 p.m., according to emergency officials.

Tuesday WFMY News 2 was given an exclusive copy of surveillance video from inside Grace Christian Academy which is a school located at the church. The video shows the exact moment the logging truck slammed into one of the classrooms.

The fortunate thing is school hasn't started yet for the academy, however they had an open house Tuesday night. Classes are scheduled to start Wednesday despite the setback.

Police say the truck driver was approaching a stoplight fast and could not stop. He veered left, clipped a car, then another vehicle as well coming from a different direction, before crashing into the church.

The person who was in the car driving in the other direction was taken to Duke Medical in serious condition.

56-year-old Kenneth Kirkman was ticketed with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision. He was the driver of the truck that went into the school.

"He was on scene for the duration of the investigation he didn’t ask for EMS and he wasn’t transported for any injuries," Sgt. Doug Faulls with the Haw River Police Department said.

The accident is raising questions about the nearby intersection that leads to Highway 49.

"It’s an interesting intersection, we get a lot of traffic out of Yanceyville and Roxboro and outside of the city limits its highway 49," Sgt. Faulls said. "From that intersection, you can either proceed down Roxboro road or you can kind of make a half left turn onto North Wilkins road, or almost a 180 degree left turn back onto Bason Road so if people aren’t familiar with the intersection sometimes they get confused."

Haw River Police added they haven't seen a serious crash like this one off of Roxboro Road in quite some time.

The wing the destroyed classroom is in has been condemned for the time being. The rest of the building is fine according to the school and classes will start on Wednesday, right on schedule. They have put up a makeshift wall in the condemned classroom for now.

The school's communications office says the first-grade teacher whose classroom was destroyed is distraught. She's been a teacher for 39 years and had a lot of her personal belongings in that room.
