VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (WVEC) — It's a good day to head to the beach, just be aware of the potential for rip currents as the risk is elevated Friday, the National Weather Service in Wakefield said.

As always heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach patrol and pay attention to flags and posted signs.

If you ever find yourself in a rip current, don't panic and don't fight the current. Try to swim parallel and out of it. If you can't seem to escape, try to float and tread the water.

For your safety swim near a lifeguard.
