NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Newport News police say an officer shot and injured a dog that allegedly attacked him over the weekend.

Investigators say officers had been called out to the 200 block of Lyttle Drive on Saturday afternoon in response to a domestic dispute. A pit bull/shepherd mix reportedly came running out of the residence and aggressively charged at the officers.

The dog then bit one of the officers on his left hand. The dog tried biting the officer again, at which point investigators say the officer pulled out his gun and fired a single shot, grazing the animal.

The dog then ran off in the opposite direction. It was found about a block away and taken to a local animal clinic to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The officer was also treated for his bite wound.

An administrative investigation is ongoing, because the officer discharged his gun.
