Parents urged to sign up kids for swim class on National Learn to Swim Day

The 7th annual Swimways National Learn to Swim Day is Saturday, May 19.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The 7th annual Swimways National Learn to Swim Day is Saturday, May 19.

According to a study by Griffith Institute for Educational Research, children who were taught how to swim before age 5 had statistically higher IQs because of early sensory and motor stimulation in the water.

Elizabeth Beisel, Two-Time Olympic Medalist, USA Swimming Foundation Ambassador and Swimways National Learn to Swim Day spokesperson says swimming benefits go way beyond helping someone become physically fit.

"Children that learn how to swim before the age of 5 have better motor skills, cognitive functions, mathematical skills."

She says Learn to Swim Day encourages parents to sign their kids up for swim classes that will promote more confidence around water.

The USA Swimming Foundation can connect kids to classes in their area that have no more than six students.
